In the game against Delhi Capitals (DC), Sanju Samson, the Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) captain, broke the rules of the IPL. This match was at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, located in New Delhi, on a recent Tuesday. His punishment for this misstep? The wicketkeeper-batter now owes 30 percent of his game fee as a fine.
The IPL’s report indicates, RR’s leader ‘made a Level 1 mistake under Item 2.8 of the IPL’s Conduct Code.’ The Match Referee’s penalty was accepted by him.
“During Match 56 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Rajasthan Royals’ Captain Sanju Samson was penalized. The IPL Code of Conduct saw him transgressing its guidelines. Faced a 30% cut to his match fees. The incident occurred against Delhi Capitals and the venue was Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi, on May 07, 2024,” read the release.
“Under Article 2.8 of IPL’s Code of Conduct, Samson made a Level 1 misstep. He recognized his mistake, agreeing with the Match Referee’s penalty. The Referee’s verdict for Level 1 missteps is unchangeable, ruling without appeal,” the statement shed light.
Sanju Samson did Something Wrong
Samson did something wrong, but we’re not sure what. Maybe he fought with the umpires when he was declared out. This happened after Shai Hope made a catch close to the boundaries during the 16th over. Did Hope’s feet cross those same boundaries while making the catch? The third umpire decided Samson was out. Not satisfied, the RR skipper expressed his complaint. He was heading back to the locker room, but did a U-turn to voice out his concerns to the umpires on the field.
Samson got a Rs 12 lakh penalty on April 10 too. This happened because RR had a sluggish over rate in their game against Gujarat Titans in Jaipur.
Article 2.8 in the IPL’s Conduct Code defines a Level 1 breach. This can be showing too much upset over an Umpire’s call, taking too long to play again or exit the pitch, asking the TV Umpire for a second opinion, or persistently debating or discussing the Umpire’s decision.

Delhi Capitals vs Rajasthan Royals Match Highlight
Kuldeep Yadav:: Bowling at a good length is vital, especially in death overs. My main challenge always. I faced Ferreira in South Africa, recognized him as a back foot player. I aimed to stay full, quick. Out in the first ball. Sent several seam-up balls to understand batters. Length matters to me, my key focus. When we score over 200, bowlers feel the pressure. But with it comes a chance to take wickets. I focused on backing my strengths, never stopped believing.
Rishabh Pant, DC skipper: Our bowlers performed greatly towards the end, which was a key takeaway. We aim to absorb lessons from each game. No matter winning or losing, we stay grounded and focused. Kuldeep, as ever, came through for us, a pleasant sight. We assumed if we could restrict them to 200, that would be reasonable. This was our line of thinking.
Sanju Samson, RR skipper:We almost made it – the 10-11 runs per over was within our reach but such outcomes are common in the IPL. When making decisions, we typically consider the game conditions, however; aiming for 220 was probably overreaching. DC truly played a solid game. Their opening batsman was hitting hard until Ashwin took him down. Still, I believe we gave up too many runs in the final overs. So far, we’ve suffered 3 losses, but they’ve all been close calls. The IPL’s intensity forbids any relaxation, so we need to stay the course and make any necessary adjustments. Giving credit where it’s due, Stubbs really hammered Sandeep, who’s traditionally our star player.
DC vs RR IPL 2024
Mukesh Kumar is set to pitch the last round for DC. Trent Boult steps up to bat. First ball out, and it’s a single. This puts Rovman Powell back into the batter’s box. If RR wants tonight’s two points, it’s up to Powell. But then, Mukesh knocks Powell out on the next pitch. That might be the game. The final straw for Rajasthan. Avesh Khan steps up to plate next. He manages a couple from the following pitch. The score stands at 26 needed from the last trio. Three legal pitches left. The next one results in a four. But it’s immaterial now. DC is satisfied with tonight’s points, ensuring a good playoff position. The final result – a win by 20 runs. RR misses the mark to outdo KKR at the table summit. Big home win for DC.
It’s Rasikh Dar Salam’s third over at bat. Rovman Powell powerfully drives a full toss just above ground level deep over the long on fence. A whopping SIX points! The ball flew a staggering 97m. But that’s where it ends. A commendable over from the young player, giving away just eight. Now, only 29 are required from the final over.
