RR vs RCB- England star’s 100 not out eclipses Kohli’s unbeaten l13 off 72 balls as Royals seal it by 6 wickets in Jaipur
MUMBAI: Jos Buttler, the opening batter, helped Rajasthan Royals secure a six-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru. An unforgettable six sealed his hundred and the match’s victory at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Saturday.
Buttler was poised at 94 with a tie score of 183. Shocks of joy ran through the crowd as he nailed Cameron Green’s delivery for a six. This granted Rajasthan Royals their fourth back-to-back win in the IPL 2024 and a climb to a total of 189/4, beating RCB’s 183/3 with five balls to spare. Buttler’s rapid-fire century of 58 deliveries outshone Kohli’s stellar unbeaten hundred, an unmatched eighth in IPL history.
Buttler’s dynamic partnership with captain Sanju Samson (69 off 42b) took care of the significant target, propelling Rajasthan Royals to the top of the scoreboard. Kohli with his I13* amounted to over 60% of his team’s total, but suffered from not enough support shots. Ultimately, RCB couldn’t set a high enough bar to challenge Royals’ powerful batting lineup. Throughout, Buttler and Samson, had together pushed aside the early setback of Yashasvi Jaiswal’s out on the second ball, coming together for a phenomenal partnership of 148 runs in just 14.2 overs.

The England T20 captain briskly scored fifty runs in 30 balls while Samson achieved his half-century in 33 balls. They played with notable intensity against left-arm spinner Mayank Dagar. Buttler initiated the aggression, focusing on Dagar in the final over of the powerplay, nabbing 20 runs. Royals reached a score of 54/l after the first six overs. Together, they strategized for the chase, pushing the total to 95/1 after 10 overs. This move reduced the requirement to 89 runs from 60 balls.
Dagar stepped in for his second over, the 11th of the game. Samson didn’t hesitate. He landed two fours and a spectacular six over cover, marking his fifty in full swing. The home team rejoiced as Buttler found his rhythm again. He started with his signature scoop over the keeper in the fourth over, served by Mohammed Siraj. Not stopping there, he fired off two fours against Yash Dayal in the subsequent over before off-loading on Dagar. No one could slow him down after that. It took until the team’s total hit 148 for Siraj to interrupt, catching Samson on the boundary.
Kohli’s century
Kohli, playing for RCB, hadn’t earned fifty runs in a single IPL game at this location. That changed this time, showing T20’s evolution. Kohli hit 100 in a slow and steady 67 balls, a tied record in the IPL.
Despite giving his best, RCB’s middle order, Maxwell, Green, and Chauhan, couldn’t keep up. Kohli ended up on his own after a 125-run open with Du Plessis. He kept up his great start to the season, taking the top spot for total runs, reaching 316 (average 105.33, S/R 146.29). He carefully looked for mistakes from the other team and hit hard, particularly against the fast bowlers, making 67 off 39 balls at a strike rate of 171.79. Versus spin bowling, he earned 46 off 33 balls at a 139.39 strike rate. Notably, three of his four sixes were against spin bowlers.
Spinners rule
His struggle with spin bowling was largely due to Yuzvendra Chahal and R Ashwin’s solid performance. Chahal outshined others with two wickets at a cost of 34 runs. Even though Ashwin didn’t claim a wicket, his meticulous bowling ended with figures of 4-0-28-0. First three of his overs were devoid of boundaries, kicking off with a mere three-run in the Powerplay. Saurav Chauhan managed to hit the single boundary against him during the last delivery, blasting a flat throw beyond midwicket.

Earlier in the week, Chahal scored 3/11 against the Mumbai Indians, putting on another magnificent show. He manipulated turn and variable bounce to stymie the batters. Chahal gained a first breakthrough when Du Plessis was caught deep in the field. So far, RCB has only won one game while losing four.
